The disease periodontitis causes the bones of the jaw gradually break down and loosening. elgydium (Photo: Hans Preus) Illness or injury can cause major bone damage different parts of our body, and this is one of the biggest challenges surgeons may encounter.
For example, periodontal disease cause the bone of the jaw gradually break down and loosening. When there is so little leg again, it will be difficult to insert new teeth.
Everything from accidents, illness and birth defects can cause major damage to the bones, elgydium and bone is currently the most transplanted tissue with over a million transplants each year in Europe alone.
The most common way to repair such damage today is to operate in bone tissue from other parts of the patient's body. However, it has several negative consequences for the patient, elgydium such as severe pain and risk of infection after surgery.
The researchers are therefore working to find alternative ways to replace bone on. One of the most promising methods is to use stem cells that can develop elgydium into beinvevsproduserende cells. There is currently clinical trials using stem cells for regeneration of various elgydium tissues.
Our body does not produce enough stem cells that can be used for any other purpose elgydium than the intended use. Researchers must therefore bring out a dose and get them to reproduce in the laboratory and then put them back into the body.
First you have to find the right type of stem cells. Cells is also dependent on a suitable scaffold, which is a kind of three-dimensional scaffold to ensure that cells growing in the right shape. And third, do the cells called growth factors, which can be viewed as a form of fertilizer.

After four years of funding from the Research Council's program for stem cell research, the results are so promising that the project has been expanded and included in international cooperation projects in the EU's 7th Framework Programme.
- The measures we have tested, showing that stem cells are a very promising approach to regenerate elgydium bone tissue. Use of stem cells in tissue engineering is promising compared to the traditional treatment, says Professor Kamal Mustafa.
Researchers were testing out new combinations of materials in the scaffolding that cells will grow. Many of the materials used today destroyed too easily, has a surface that the cells will not adhere well enough, or may cause side effects when implanted in the body.
Researchers in Bergen believe they have found a good mix of synthetic drugs. Through collaboration with various elgydium research laboratories in Europe is intensive research to find specific "building materials" to suit different needs.
The aim is that these materials will decompose quickly fit into the body, in line with the new bone structure evolves and eventually fail without the support of Scaffold.
- The cells in the laboratory, we have seen that endothelial cells have a significant influence on stem cells continued development. We have also seen that damage the bones of rats heal better with this method, says Mustafa.

- If we succeed in establishing this treatment in clinical elgydium practice, we will provide a more ideal treatment for the millions of patients worldwide with different needs for bone transplants, says Mustafa.
